Facilitation

Sometimes the most valuable thing a leader can do is step out of the room.

When a leader facilitates their own meeting, workshop or strategy session, something predictable happens: people read the room and hold back. They defer to hierarchy instead of debating the real issue.

The leader ends up managing the conversation instead of participating in it — and the best thinking in the room never surfaces. A neutral, skilled third-party facilitator changes that.

Why bring in a facilitator?

  • You need honest input, not polite agreement. People speak more freely when the person leading the room has no stake in the outcome.
  • You want to participate, not referee. As a leader, you shouldn’t have to choose between contributing your own view and managing the process.
  • The topic is sensitive or politically loaded. A neutral facilitator can hold difficult conversations without them becoming personal.
  • You need structure, not just a room booking. A good facilitator designs the conversation — the right questions, in the right order — so the time produces real outcomes, not just discussion.
  • You want the learning to stick. Facilitated reflection turns a one-off session into something people actually carry back into their work.

What I facilitate

  • Leadership team meetings and offsites
  • Strategy and planning sessions
  • Team Alignment and culture clarity sessions
  • Peer learning circles and cohort-based learning
  • Workshops (Enneagram, resilience, courageous conversations, and more)
  • Conferences and large-group events

Recent Experience: Standard Bank Peer Learning Circles

I recently facilitated a series of peer learning circles for a leading South African bank following their completion of a leadership development programme. Rather than let the learning fade after the course ended, these circles gave leaders a structured, confidential space to explore how they were actually applying what they’d learned — what was working, what was getting in the way, and what they needed to adjust.

The result: learning that moved from theory into daily practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a facilitator actually do?

A facilitator designs and guides a conversation — asking the right questions in the right order — so a group reaches real clarity, alignment or decisions, rather than just talking.

How is facilitation different from coaching?

Coaching focuses on developing an individual leader. Facilitation focuses on the group — helping a team have the conversation it needs to have, together, in the room.

Why can't the team leader just facilitate their own meeting?

When a leader facilitates their own session, people tend to defer to hierarchy rather than speak freely, and the leader has to manage the process instead of contributing their own view. A neutral third party removes both problems.

What kinds of sessions can be facilitated?

Leadership team meetings, strategy and planning sessions, peer learning circles, workshops, and conferences — any setting where honest input and real outcomes matter more than just discussion.

What is a peer learning circle?

A peer learning circle is a small, facilitated group of leaders who meet regularly to reflect on how they’re applying new skills or learning in their day-to-day work, share challenges, and hold each other accountable for real progress.
